Initially inhabited by the Coosa Indians, Childersburg, Alabama has quite an extensive history. Spanish conquistador Hernando DeSoto, along with his army of 600 men, visited here in July 1540 in search of gold. DeSoto stayed for a time with the Coosa Indians, who offered him the opportunity to settle in the area. DeSoto did not accept the offer and resumed his journey, leaving behind two men who continued to live there. Traders made their way to exchange their wares. After the defeat of the Indians in the Creek Indian War, the natives were forced out of the area and pioneers began to take up residence here.
