Cullman History

Incorporated in July of 1874, Cullman, Alabama is a city that embodies the American dream. The city and county are named after Col. John G. Cullmann, a German refugee, who arrived in the area with a dream to settle down. Beginning in 1871, Cullmann developed the area as a place where fellow Germans could come to start a new life and find peace. He was successful in his pursuits and the area that would eventually be known as the City and County of Cullman was born.

The residents of Cullman are proud of their rich heritage and look forward to sharing it with visitors. Notable places of interest include the Cullman County Museum, Weiss Cottage, Cullman Depot, and three historic districts that provide hours of enjoyment. The Betz Addition Historic District is of particular interest; few cities can lay claim to a historic district comprised of 72 residential structures that date back to the 1800s.
