Montevallo residents are fortunate to be served by an outstanding public school system, which is supplemented by private and parochial alternatives, as well as opportunities for higher education.

The Montevallo public schools are part of the Shelby County School System, and consist of an elementary school, a middle school and a high school, all of which work together with faculty, administration and the community to ensure that the highest standards in academic and social education are met.

The University of Montevallo, the state’s only public liberal arts university, is the home to many of the region’s brightest minds. The grounds are unparalleled in beauty, and were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, who also designed the landscape of New York’s Central Park and the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. UM offers 30 degree programs and 75 majors, as well as highly competitive NCAA Division II athletics.

The new Parnell Memorial Library is expanding Montevallo’s vision of what a public library can be and do in this community. The only library of its kind in Shelby County, it is the community cultural center for the Montevallo area. The 12,400-square-foot facility at 277 Park Drive houses expanded collections including new books for children, DVDs, current reference materials, and the Parnell Collection of resources on Southern and military history.

The library also features public-access computers and wireless Internet, an art gallery, the Children’s Porch and a terrace overlooking Orr Park. The Southern Writers Room is available for small-group meetings and for autograph sessions with authors. The Meeting Room, complete with audio-visual equipment and a catering kitchen, can seat 75 adults. The fully-equipped Library Theatre, like the Meeting Room, is available for rental.
