Community Introduction

Flagstaff is a study in contrasts.

The city has the charms and intimacy associated with a small mountain town while enjoying the amenities of a much larger community. The rustic beauty of the area—vast forests, gorgeous mountain views—is in harmony with the sophistication of its university community. While it celebrates its rich history, Flagstaff also strives for the new and innovative.

It’s a balancing act few places can claim to successfully master. In short, Flagstaff manages to have it all.

The Coconino National Forest, the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa Pine trees, surrounds Flagstaff. To the north are the San Francisco Peaks, creating a picture-postcard perfect view. At night, a myriad of stars are highly visible, courtesy of Flagstaff’s pride in being the first “International Dark Sky City.” The city maintains not only many parks to enjoy these natural wonders, but also a 50-mile urban trail system within and around the city.

Unlike its neighbors in the Valley of the Sun, Flagstaff is situated in the mountains 7,000 feet above sea level, and has four distinct seasons. Snow in the winter makes it a desirable destination for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and general snow play. The spring finds fields awash in beautiful flowers. Summer is marked by cool temperatures and afternoon showers during the monsoon season, while autumn brings crisp days and the yellowing of the Aspen trees so popular at high altitude.

Flagstaff’s location is a top-ranking asset when compared to other western locales. Being only 80 miles from the nation’s #1 National Park, the Grand Canyon, and the closest border town to the largest Indian reservation, the Navajo Nation, create unmatched tourism opportunities. Phoenix, one of the largest cities in the Southwest, is only two hours south if an urban setting is in the plan. Las Vegas and Albuquerque are short drives east or west of Flagstaff.

Flagstaff isn’t, however, just the hub of a wheel with fascinating spokes. It’s home to one of the state’s three universities and a well-respected community college, and is a vibrant educational center. The city boasts a thriving artistic community and many venues for the performing arts. Outdoor enthusiasts can find a wide variety of recreational activities to enjoy in pristine settings.

For residents, Flagstaff’s diversity coupled with its manageable size and central location make it an ideal place to live.
