As its name implies, North Phoenix represents about a third of the land area of Phoenix. It is 242-square miles in size, with a current population (445,808) projected to increase to 772,564 by 2020.
The North Phoenix area is divided into five planning areas called urban villages, in order to work better with the local community on planning and development issues. The goal for each Village is to offer a variety of housing, job opportunities, education, recreation and shopping facilities.
While the Villages have their own distinctive qualities, they have a common bond. Residents enjoy the abundance of sunshine, an outdoor-oriented lifestyle and are afforded views of mountains in all directions. Hence, the name for all of Phoenix - "The Valley of the Sun."
North Phoenix is a good place to live, work and play. Getting there or leaving is easy thanks to quality transportation systems which link the area to the rest of Phoenix and the world.
Phoenixs international airport, Sky Harbor Airport, is an easy 20-minute commute from just about anywhere in North Phoenix. The airport, complete with three runways, is home to most major airlines. Connections to practically anywhere in the world can be made out of Sky Harbor Airport.
Deer Valley Airport also serves North Phoenix. The airport, located in North Phoenix, is attractive to companies that use corporate jet travel because it is much less busy than Sky Harbor Airport. Deer Valley Airport also has plenty of room for personal aircraft storage.
Three of the Valleys most efficient thoroughfares go through North Phoenix. Interstate 17 runs north-south through the area as does Highway 51. A new highway, the 101 loop, runs east-west through the area. The loop is designed to link the entire Valley.
While the residents are automobile oriented, an expanding bus system, Dial-A-Ride Service, and planned light rail make easy access to the entire city and its many amenities.
