Once again it is a privilege for our entire staff to congratulate the recipients of the Awards of Excellence sponsored by our publication, Builder Profile Magazine. The criteria used by our professional staff to select from Builder Profile's 1995 Cover Stories were based on those companies that have continually demonstrated a long-term commitment to the principals of quality construction and dedicated customer service as well as having made an extraordinary contribution to the development of quality lifestyle communities.

It takes an unwavering dedication to these principals on the part of the entire staff of a building firm to earn a reputation of excellence that continues year after year. Therefore, these awards represent the cooperative efforts of the entire company and each person who contributes to their company's excellence deserves to be considered a recipient of their company's award. The three categories of awards include the 1996 Builder of the Year, 1996 Custom Home Builder of the Year, and the 1996 Development of the Year.

1996 Builder of the Year: Gallagher & Henry

For anyone who has lived in the South and Southwest suburban areas of Chicagoland, the name Gallagher & Henry is synonymous with "a strong, quality all-brick home at affordable prices". And certainly, just about every Chicagoland home builder and subcontractor recognizes this stalwart name which has dominated the entire south suburban area for over 42 years. Gallagher & Henry created the meaning for the word "quality" in home building to thousands of homeowners in the south suburban area laying the foundation for what quality lifestyle communities stand for and forcing competing home builders to attempt to equal these high standards. Last year Gallagher & Henry commemorated the laying of its 100th million brick on a home it constructed in the Estates of Ishnalla Woods in Orland Park. It is the only home builder in the Chicagoland area that can boast of this achievement.

No other home builder in this metropolitan and suburban area has used as many bricks in the construction of single family homes as Gallagher & Henry. It is the trademark that distinguishes this home building company from many of its competitors, along with basic traditional and functional floor plans, the use of superior products in all areas of construction and dedicated customer service. "Since we started building homes in 1953, 98 percent of the approximately 12,000 homes we have constructed have been all brick homes," said Gallagher.

"Buyers in the south and southwest suburbs have long considered brick construction to be an important feature in a quality home. We have kept the price as affordable as possible to ensure that all of our buyers, regardless of price, can have brick homes. When we entered the west suburban market of Darien, Downers Grove and Woodridge over 25 years ago, we continued this tradition." Gallagher added, "We use between 12,000 and 14,000 bricks in each of our homes." For its dedication to the use of brick, Gallagher & Henry was named "Brick Builder of the Year" in l994 ky the National Association of Brick Distributors. The company today has active communities in Tinley Park, Orland Park, Palos Township, Homer Township, Lemont, Darien and Woodridge.

1996 Custom Home Builder of the Year: Empeco Incorporated

Mark Perlman, President of Empeco Incorporated, based in Northbrook, is a custom home builder who is dedicated to making the home building process an exciting, joyful experience. He likens building a custom home to an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii. "I tell people, 'Think of your finished new home as the islands. It's the destination you've always dreamed of. You have the finest accommodations in the very best hotel, luxury amenities at your beck and call. The only thing is, we forgot to make the plane reservations so we're going to have to row there."

"That's the building process - it will take some time, and we'll all have to work together as a crew. It will, for the most part, be a smooth and pleasant cruise; we might occasionally run into rough waters, maybe even spring a small leak that needs repair, but we'll be sure you get there." Perlman uses this light-hearted analogy to emphasize not only the rewards of a careful, deliberate custom building or renovation process, but also that it can be a fun experience for customers.

Helping his home buyers enjoy their trip, as well as providing only the highest standards in quality construction, is what has earned Empeco, Incorporated a reputation of excellence throughout the North, Northwest and Western suburban areas. Empeco provides full construction services, from remodeling and additions to custom luxury homes priced from $400,000 to multi-million dollar estates.

The builder is renowned for such projects as the development of Bishop's Gate of Lincolnshire, Hillshire Estates of Inverness, and numerous private residenhal projects on Chicago's Northshore. "The very philosophy of our business is understanding that we're not just pouring foundations and putting up walls," Perlman explained. "We're building a home for people - couples, individuals, families. And we're working with people - our contractors and suppliers. It translates into building homes with unique 'personalities'. Communication with our customers has been one of the keys to Empeco's success. Every customer knows that he or she can pick up the phone anytime, day or night, to discuss their project or get a question answered." Dedicated to professionalism, Perlman also is serving his second year as Chairman of the Custom Builders Council.

1996 Development of the Year: Boulder Ridge

Boulder Ridge, located in Lake in the Hills and developed by Par Development, Inc. includes three distinctively elegant communities that intertwine through one of the finest 18-hole golf courses designed by PGA pro Fuzzy Zoeller. Its country club, resort atmosphere offers distinguished country club living for families, young professionals and empty nesters alike. Quiet streets wind amiably through The Greens, Estate Homes, and Fairway Homes as the lush green fairways are viewed from the backyards of each resident. And homeowners of every neighborhood are never more than a few minutes stroll from the clubhouse or golf course, or a short drive from shopping, dining and entertainment.
