On behalf of the City Council of the City of La Cañada Flintridge, I would like to congratulate the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce & Community Association for their outstanding work on behalf of the residents and businesses of our community and for their outstanding friendship and partnership with both our City and our La Cañada Unified School District. This partnership triad has brought about a quality of life for our community that is unrivaled anywhere in the State of California or nation. As city council members, we are humbled and honored to serve alongside the chamber board of directors and the school district governing board as stewards for the preservation of our very unique culture and way of life.
This year, as we celebrate 40 years of cityhood, I am reminded of the valuable role that the Chamber of Commerce & Community Association played in bringing about the incorporation of our city. In 1976, the “chamber” was the de facto city and they worked tirelessly to represent the needs and concerns of our residents and merchants. As the two communities of La Cañada and Flintridge contemplated joining together as one in cityhood, it was the chamber, through its service and assistance to our residents and merchants, that extoled the benefits of a responsive government and exemplified what could be accomplished as a united community; it was the chamber that bolstered community support for our local businesses which laid the groundwork for the financial stability and sustainability that would be necessary for maintaining cityhood; and it was the chamber, serving as information ambassadors, that helped reassure our residents and merchants that self-governance equated to better governance for our citizenry.
As we share the common values of: embracing our vibrant business community that creates a unique sense of place for all; ensuring a safe and secure community; protecting our neighborhoods from over-development; maintaining clean streets, parks, recreational facilities, trails and a respect for our natural environment; being fiscally conservative but proactive so that we remain financially strong; and supplementing our schools’ efforts in providing quality educational opportunities for our children, the chamber, then and now, plays an important role in this partnership and has been vital in achieving the La Cañada Flintridge quality of life that we have all come to enjoy and expect as one united community.
I am very honored to serve as your mayor in this, our 40th year, and I am pleased to express the city council’s appreciation to the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce & Community Association and its residential and business members for its assistance in realizing and perpetuating the La Cañada Flintridge experience.
Congratulations and best wishes,
Jonathan C. Curtis
