What is a Chamber of Commerce?

A Chamber of Commerce is an action agency designed to meet the needs of the business community. It is membership driven designed to support and promote its members. It is an organization made up of individuals and businesses who band together to advance the commercial, financial, industrial and civic interests of a community. Among other things, it is a civic clearinghouse, a public relations counselor, an information bureau and a research and promotion medium.

What does it do?

The variety of a Chamber’s activities is virtually unlimited, depending on our members’ needs and the ability of the Chamber to meet those needs. Its overall mission is to:

• Create a strong Local Economy
• Provide Networking Opportunities
• Promote the Community
• Represent Business Interest to our local Board of Supervisors
• Political Advocacy

How does it work?

Action groups, called committees, are the backbone of the Chamber. They are the units that accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives. The needs of the community and policies of the Chamber determine the kinds and number of these action groups.

Who are its members?

Any firm or individual sharing a common interest in business improvement is eligible for membership. Eligibility requirements are usually spelled out in the organization’s bylaws. Fees, subscription rates or dues are usually determined by the Board of Directors based on budgetary needs.

Who pays for it?

Financed on a voluntary basis, the organization’s expenses are apportioned among its members, consisting of firms, small businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals. Chamber membership is an investment in the present and future of the business community’s welfare.

Who runs it?

The organization is run by a Board of Directors, elected by the Chamber’s members. The Board, serving without pay, sets the policies of the organization. The administrative head of the Chamber is employed by the Board.

A Chamber of Commerce, like all businesses, exists because it has a product to sell. A Chamber of Commerce has an intangible product, but it is still a product. The product is the organization itself. It is a vehicle for mobilizing the people of the business community to accomplish agreed upon goals for the betterment of that community.
