Location and Transportation

Milpitas is strategically positioned in the southern Bay Area, just 10 minutes north of San Jose and 55 minutes southeast of San Francisco. This location places the city in the northeastern corner of Silicon Valley – a haven to some of the world’s largest high-tech companies.

The Milpitas community is bisected north-to-south by Interstates 680 and 880, and east-to-west by State Highway 237. Other major thoroughfares in the area include the Montague Expressway and U.S. Highway 101, which lies just minutes south of town. Both area commuters and visitors enjoy the connectivity of these highways, as well as the convenience of several public transit systems.

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is the main public transportation provider in the community, offering a number of affordable and expedient routes via light rail, express shuttle and fixed-route bus. Local VTA lines not only provide a link to local destinations, like the Great Mall and employment centers, but also offer a connection to other regional transit options, including Altamont Commuter Express, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Caltrain commuter rail. Amtrak regional passenger rail is available in Santa Clara and San Jose.

In the near future, BART will have a presence right in town, thanks to the forthcoming 16-mile Silicon Valley Extension. The first phase of the project,

the 10-mile Berryessa Extension, will begin south of Fremont’s future Warm Springs station, traveling through Milpitas and ending in northern San Jose. This extension project includes the construction of a station in Milpitas at the Montague Expressway and Capitol Avenue junction. The new station will connect with the

VTA light rail system via a pedestrian bridge. Passenger service is scheduled

to begin in 2018.

Adding to this exceptional transportation structure in Milpitas within 50 miles are three ports (Redwood City, San Francisco Bay and Oakland) along with three major airports. The closest is the Mineta San Jose International Airport, positioned 10 minutes from Milpitas. Oakland International Airport is reachable in 30 minutes, while San Francisco International Airport is 50 minutes away.
