Emergency Preparedness: When people hear the words emergency preparedness, the perception may be…preparedness falls on the local officials within their communities, which, in context, is correct; the City of Patterson oversees the emergency management program including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery for the entire city and its residents; however, it goes much deeper than that.

Just as important as protecting our community, the City of Patterson has to plan for continuity-of-government—moving forward after a disaster has taken place. We must be prepared to conduct business even with blocked roads, disruption of utility services and loss of critical infrastructure such as communications.

In addition, preparing for potential disasters includes all of us – taking a collaborative and cooperative approach – from our local elected and appointed officials; subject-matter experts; community-based organizations; social service agencies; faith-based organizations and civic groups; citizens (whether affiliated with a group or independent); the private sector, including our local Chamber of Commerce and private businesses; and media organizations. Each of these groups has a wealth of knowledge bringing tried-and-true or new-and-improved ideas to the table, which in turn, benefits our entire community.

I am looking forward to working with each of the various groups, individuals and businesses within our community in the near future as we take emergency preparedness to the next level!
