Transportation

Nestled at the foothills of the Gabilan Mountain ranges, within California’s beautiful Central Coast region, San Benito County is easily accessible by various modes of transportation.

Highways – Several major arterial roadways wind through the communities of San Benito County, connecting the area with surrounding counties, regional attractions and the Silicon Valley. U.S. Highway 101 travels through the county’s westernmost boundary and connects with three of the most widely used highways in the area – Highways 25, 129 and 156. Highway 156 offers a link to Highway 152 in northern Hollister, which in turn connects to Interstate 5 in less than one hour to the east.

Public Transit – Commuters and visitors in need of affordable and convenient public transit options are served by San Benito County Express. County Express benefits Hollister, San Juan Bautista and Gilroy with daily fixed-route bus service, as well as three intercounty bus routes, dial-a-ride and service to Gavilan College, the Greyhound Bus Terminal and the CalTrain commuter rail station, all in Gilroy.

Rail – Freight service is supplied through Southern Pacific Railway, which operates its main north-south coastal route through Salinas.

Air – Hollister operates a municipal airport in town that caters to the general aviation community, as well as a variety of airport-related businesses, including Gavilan College’s aviation program and the California Department of Forestry’s Air Attack Base. The closest commercial airports include Monterey Regional Airport and San Jose International Airport.
