Introduction

Founded in 1771, the City of San Gabriel is the oldest European settlement in Los Angeles County. With a population of 39,804, this “City with a Mission” offers diversity, many business opportunities and a rich cultural heritage. With more than 1,100 businesses, the entrepreneurial spirit is obvious as regional and international trade continues to grow.

Being only 10 miles northeast of Los Angeles, San Gabriel played an important role in strengthening the surrounding communities with its mission life. The City of San Gabriel is the birthplace of the Los Angeles region. Mission life in America reached its fullest development in California, especially in San Gabriel. While the surrounding areas were still frontier lands, the Franciscan Fathers founded a mission that would play a major role in the growth of Southern California. The Fathers’ introduction of orange trees and grapevines to the area began the fundamental agricultural industry. Mission San Gabriel Archangel is a California state historical landmark. The mission, founded by Father Junipero Serra, was the fourth of 21 California missions, and it is still an active parish today in the beautiful San Gabriel Mission District, where visitors experience the charm of early California.
