Economy and Industy

Moffat County was born in the days of sheep and cattle wars and wagon mines. Today, agriculture accounts for about nine percent of the county’s jobs, yet contributes widely to its lifestyle and culture. The energy industry is the lynchpin that holds the area’s economy stable regardless of the state and federal economic climate. Coal mining, natural gas and oil companies make up nine of the county’s top 10 property tax payers. With some of the nation’s largest herds of deer and elk, along with the myriad of winter and summer recreational opportunities we offer in 2,432,632 acres of public lands, tourism also contributes substantially to Moffat County’s economy.

Craig isn’t just a great place to visit; it’s a great place to do business. With a growing interest in the reserves of oil and natural gas and the hardy coal industry, our economy continues to expand.

Moffat County welcomes relocating businesses and new industries. The Craig Chamber of Commerce is the primary information center and the community has a valuable resource in the Craig/Moffat County Economic Development Partnership. Colorado Northwestern Community College tailors its programs to meet the needs of area businesses and workforce demands, and the Colorado Workforce Center is an asset to both employers and job seekers.
