30 Years of Progress & Excellence
The success of the businesses in and around the Quiet Resorts is due to the cooperation between local merchants and the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2006, the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce boasts more than 800 active members and a host of national awards.
The Chamber is active in education, public policy and charitable work. Throughout the year, the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce hosts several award-winning events that bring residents, visitors, and businesses together. They also showcase the beauty and charm of the area. The events are made possible through the support of the Chamber member businesses.
Through businesses’ sponsorships the Chamber is able to continually present outstanding events. In turn, events such as the Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival bring thousands of people into downtown Bethany Beach during a weekend that would not normally draw so many people to the downtown businesses. Proceeds from the events benefit the many programs and services offered by the Chamber. In addition, all net proceeds from the Leo Brady Exercise Like the Eskimos event benefit the Quiet Resorts Charitable Foundation.
A few of the events sponsored by the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce are the Annual Leo Brady Exercise Like the Eskimos, held every New Year’s Day at Noon in Bethany Beach. Participants welcome the New Year by braving the waves of the cold Atlantic to raise money for charity. If you don’t want to splash solo, gather together a team and compete for the coveted Iceberg Trophy and bragging rights for the whole year. Or, if you can’t stand the cold, watch the splashers from the Boardwalk with a cup of hot chocolate in hand and enjoy this crazy New Year’s Day tradition.
The Annual Hometown Pet Show, every New Year’s Day at the Bethany Beach Bandstand, begins just before the Leo Brady Exercise Like the Eskimos and gives the furry and not-so-furry friends a chance to strut their stuff. Pets can compete for prizes in a variety of categories such as Best Dressed and Looks Most Like Owner. Proceeds from the event benefit local animal rescue programs and shelters. Don’t miss out on this chance to show off your favorite pet!
The Winter Blues Ball, held in January, is a black-tie event that allows members to get out and socialize during the chilly winter months, while helping the Chamber to pay for recent renovations and fund future capital improvements. Live music, silent and live auctions, wonderful food, and a worthy cause all add up to a great evening. Call the chamber for more information.
In April, the Annual Ocean to Bay Bike Tour offers a leisurely ride through the Quiet Resorts. Flat terrain and warm spring weather make the Ocean to Bay Bike Tour a fun way to spend a Saturday at the beach. The tour consists of 20-, 35-, and 50-mile courses that wind their way through the beautiful surrounding areas. The Bike Tour won the Governor’s Tourism Hall of Fame Award for an Annual Event in 2003.
Annual Surf-fishing Tournaments, held in May and October, give participants a chance to cast their line for one and two-day tournaments, and compete for more than $5,000 in cash and prizes. Designated fishing areas run from Fenwick Island to just North of the Indian River Inlet. There are drive-on as well as walk-on areas. Families are encouraged to participate. Children can compete for prizes in their age group. Register early to receive a discounted rate. Any angler that catches the bluefish that breaks the Delaware State record will win $25,000!!
The Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival held in September offers a great day to stroll the boardwalk in Bethany Beach and see the talents of more than 100 artists. Jewelry, painting, pottery, and glass are just a few of the fine arts you will find at the Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival. The event has been held for more than 25 years and was inducted into the Governor’s Tourism Hall of Fame in 1999. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Every October the Chamber organizes its Annual Fall Golf Outing, which promises a great day of golf at one of the chamber member golf courses, all for charity. Get together a foursome and compete for a variety of prizes, and enjoy a day on the greens with your friends! Every golfer receives a complimentary golf shirt and lunch. Register your foursome early because this event is always a sell out. A finale party and auction are held after the outing.
The season wraps up with the Selbyville Christmas Parade. It is a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the holiday season. Floats, marching bands, decorated cars, and more all lead the way for Santa and his sleigh. Admission is free, and if you would like to enter the parade, call the Chamber at (302) 539-2100.
