The area’s rich history stretches all the way back to the 7th Century when Native American Indians populated the area; while Destin’s immediate heritage can be traced back to the arrival of its founding father, Leonard Destin, in 1839.
Destin set sail from Connecticut in 1835, traveling with two additional ships transporting his father and brother. Upon the expedition’s collision with a hurricane near Cape Canaveral—a catastrophe leading to the destruction of the accompanying ships, and ultimately the deaths of Destin’s father and brother—Destin found himself on the northwest coast of Florida in hopes of the discovery of new and ample opportunities. And opportunities were soon found in the fishing industry. Soon, Destin became a small, but established fishing village.
