History

Sun City Center is the brainchild of Del Webb, a developer who had already created Sun City retirement communities near Phoenix and California. During opening week in 1962, some 41,000 people drove here to see what this man from Arizona was up to. Advertisements declared that homes started at under $10,000! Traffic was frequently at a standstill along U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail) both north and south of Ruskin, and on U.S. 301 for miles. Nonetheless, many visitors correctly foresaw the potential for this utopian community and bought a house.

Volunteerism was the theme; “a town too active to retire” was the slogan from the very start. Del Webb insisted that all the amenities be in place before the first customers were let in the door. He announced that the recreation center, the arts and crafts buildings, the playing fields and property for future expansion would be turned over to a civic association of residents at no cost to the community.

Over the past five decades, Sun City Center has grown from muddy cow pastures to one of the premier retirement communities in the nation. Situated within 10 miles of beautiful Tampa Bay and its waterfront restaurants and marinas, Sun City Center attracts mature adults who want to enjoy the local beaches and unspoiled rivers that make Florida, well, Florida.

Housing prices in Sun City Center will fit any income. Condos can range from the $20s to the $80s. Single-family homes and duplexes can range from $75,000 to $500,000. Hundreds of homes are situated on golf courses or lakes, and even more are in the gated Kings Point community. If you’re not sure where you want to be, rentals are available in both condominiums and in single-family homes. From the smallest one-bedroom to manors with screened lanais and pools, whatever you are looking for, we have it. All of our residences have access to the community areas, fitness centers, playing fields and more.

Several developers are providing new custom-built homes, and models are available for you to tour.

Sun City Center also has several independent living communities. These are apartments with utilities, restaurant-quality meals, housekeeping and more provided in one monthly fee. For those needing additional assistance, Sun City Center is also home to numerous Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing facilities.

The Chamber of Commerce has access to many Realtors and will send relocation packages to anyone who requests one.
