The Sponge Docks, located just north of downtown Tarpon Springs, offer a fascinating peek into the world of sponge harvesting. A little known industry, the Gulf of Mexico houses approximately 9,300 square miles of sponge along the bottom, in depths from 30 to 150 feet. Tarpon Springs, set in the middle of this sea bounty, is known as the sponge capital of the world.
