Mitchell County was founded in 1857 and is named for General Henry Mitchell, who was a pivotal leader and fought for independence during the Revolutionary War. For many years General Mitchell was also a Senator of Georgia. The City of Camilla, which serves as the county seat, was named for General Mitchells granddaughter.
