There are more than 40 accessible city parks, many with amenities such as play structures and shelters. In cooperation with Idaho State University, the Portneuf Greenway Foundation and the City of Pocatello, there are many scenic paths for those who enjoy outdoors activities– hiking, walking, snowshoeing and mountain and motor biking. Our unique lava rimrock formations provide challenging rock climbing opportunities. Both winter and summer outdoor recreation equipment is available for rent. Nearby, there are the well-used and easily accessed Pebble Creek Ski slopes and Mink Creek Nordic ski area for groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Pocatello City Parks and Recreation Department boasts a first-class aquatic center featuring a water slide, lazy river, activity pool and a kiddy pool, including interactive water play equipment. There is a community recreation center offering water aerobics, weight training, racquetball and an indoor climbing wall. Pocatello Zoo is devoted to showcasing animals that are native to the Northwest, including badger, elk, bison, grizzly, cougar, eagle, waterfowl, coyotes and many other species. The Zoo is in the process of extensive renovation, taking advantage of ancient lava flow formations as a natural backdrop for the exhibits.

For those who enjoy golf, there are two well-groomed and challenging 18-hole public golf courses, as well as a private country club. A number of private and city tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields and a skateboarding and rollerblading park are also available. Idaho State University and private facilities offer horseback riding, camping facilities, roller-skating, roller hockey, weight training, exercise facilities, paintball and many other diversions.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, Outdoor Life magazine made Pocatello fifth on their 2008 list of top communities for outdoor enthusiasts. Mentioned was our close proximity to public lands, legendary trout fishing, high country elk and trophy mule deer. With many forests, rivers and lakes nearby, hunting and fishing stories abound.
