Aurora’s rapid growth has led City leaders to follow their vision of a community prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow, today. Aurora was incorporated in 1857 as a home-rule community governed by a full-time mayor who coordinates his efforts with the city’s 10 aldermen and department commissioners. Using communications technology, teamwork and years of experience, they have instilled a sense of pride and accomplishment throughout the community, bringing many improvements, creating new jobs and preparing for further expansion.

The Aurora Police Department, staffed by more than 270 full-time officers, is the third largest police agency in the State of Illinois. The APD is highly visible and active throughout the community and is recognized throughout Illinois as a leader in sponsoring public service programs including a Citizens’ Police Academy, anti-drug and anti-gang programs, and a Neighborhood Watch. The dedicated officers have developed a solid foundation within the community and have formed partnerships with active citizen groups who assist in neighborhood patrols and problem solving.

When a call comes in, rest assured that the Aurora Fire Department will be on the scene in no time. Operating out of nine strategically placed stations, the 180 full-time firefighters are extensively trained, highly motivated and experienced to deal with any situation. They use the latest firefighting technology, most advanced equipment and superior know-how to promote the continued safety of the community. The department also oversees CPR classes, attends career days at schools, and offers mentoring programs.
