Fire Prevention

When it comes to public safety, the village of Buffalo Grove Fire Department agrees that prevention is the best protection. As a way to open the lines of communication between the fire department and the community it services, the village has established the Citizens Fire Academy—a 12-week program designed to keep citizens informed of both the fire department’s important role in the village and how citizens can help keep our community safe.

The Citizens Fire Academy meets for three hours one evening a week for 12 weeks. Through the academy, participants receive structured training in 11 different of topics—from CPR and Emergency Medical Response to fire prevention, auto extrication and communications. Each topic is presented by personnel specialized in that particular subject area. The program ends with a live burning session, which exposes participants to the conditions faced during a fire.

To date, this valuable outreach program has graduated nearly 200 citizens.
