Recreation

Residents of Buffalo Grove are proud to have an outstanding recreational resource in the nationally-prominent Buffalo Grove Park District. An accredited Illinois Distinguished Leisure Services Agency, the Buffalo Grove Park District maintains 51 parks and facilities totaling more than 418 acres in the community. And not only is the overall park district itself an award-winning organization, but many of its programs and facilities have garnered accolades in recent times, as well.

In 2011, the park district’s performing arts division received the National Dorothy Mullen Arts & Humanities, Class IV Award, and in multiple years, both the Golf Dome & Sports Center and the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center have been ranked among the finest facilities in the U.S. and beyond.

Golf Dome & Sports Center
The Buffalo Grove Park District’s Golf & Sports Center stands as one of the country’s leading indoor golf training and practice facilities. In fact, the Golf Range Association of America has recognized the facility among the “Top 10” Golf Domes in North America for the last six years.

The temperature-controlled dome spans 30,000 square feet and features a 65-foot-high ceiling ideal for full shots and short game practice. Realistic targets simulate golf holes at various distances, and the tee mats and balls offer an alignment feature to assist the golfer with aiming. A putting green and separate chipping green with two sand bunkers (one with soft sand, the other with coarse sand) are available for those looking to improve on their short game.

The versatile center is also equipped with a full-service pro shop, snack shop, private and group instruction (led by two LPGA and three PGA professionals), along with spaces for indoor soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, football and events/meetings. Athletic training programs, an athletic enhancement program and a fitness and conditioning program round out the eclectic offerings of the Buffalo Grove Golf & Sports Center.

Buffalo Grove Fitness Center
The Buffalo Grove Fitness Center has been a popular recreation and wellness spot for residents since 2000. The Buffalo Grove Park District came to own and operate the facility in 2009 and has since garnered national attention for its outstanding facilities and programming. In both 2010 and 2011, the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center earned recognition as one of Club Industry magazine’s “Top 100 Fitness Centers in America.”

Within its walls, the 70,000-square-foot fitness center offers a range of unique features, including an on-site, full-service spa, physical therapy services through AthletiCo, a women’s workout room, a brand new Pilates equipment studio and a brand new specialty training room. Also included is a full-sized basketball court with high school, college and NBA-sanctioned three-point lines, an indoor track, Kids Club child care and a 25-yard, indoor, five-land lap pool, warm water therapy pool and Jacuzzi.

Supplementing its state-of-the-art facilities is a year-round catalog of programs for children, youth, teens and adults. More than 100 free classes are offered each week for members, including Yoga, Pilates, spinning, Zumba, aquatic fitness and more. In addition, the fitness center presents specialized programming for seniors, a combination nutrition and training programming and a unique veterans wellness program.

According to John Wierzbicki, assistant facility coordinator, the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center is a sort of tight-knit fitness and wellness community. “Unlike many large fitness centers, there is a feeling of being at home and a part of a family where people know your name,” he explained. “For a facility this large, that is a rare occurrence, and it makes it a great fitness center to be a part of.”
