Telecommunications

The picture is getting clearer by the day. Television and the technology that supports it continue to evolve, bringing new and innovative opportunities to broadcasters and consumers. High-definition will soon be the new and only standard in our industry. The impact will be profound and powerful.

In 2009, over-the-air television will be available exclusively in HD. Lawmakers, television manufacturers and networks are working to ensure a smooth transition and to continue to make free, over-the-air television available to every American. However, the metamorphosis of television as we know it is happening now.

Today CBS 2 Chicago operates in a multi-platform universe. When we are not on-air, we are online. We re-launched cbs2chicago.com during the summer of 2005. The new website redefined our commitment to serving the public with local news and information and allowed us to become a 24/7 news source for our viewers. Webcasts, breaking news alerts, premiere quality streaming video, real-time traffic maps and weather alerts have made news available to our audience for on demand viewing.

Viewers want to be the first to know and they want state-of-the-art equipment for their homes, their offices, even their pockets, to keep them continually informed.

The consumer demand for new and emerging technologies is expected to surge in the coming years. As technology continues to improve, prices of HD sets and other must-have gadgets will continue to fall. Today’s technology will be available to more and more people in the months and years to come.

This is undoubtedly an exciting time for television broadcasting. However, as technology continues to evolve, our mission to serve our viewers remains our constant priority. We are committed to our diverse audience like never before with a strategic mix of news, entertainment and special events programming.

Our success has been recognized by the Illinois Associated Press who named our newscast the best in the state for two consecutive years. It’s an honor we are proud to hold and a responsibility we take very seriously.

We, as a station and a network, continue to invest in Chicago. We recently broke ground on a state-of-the-art Broadcast Center in the heart of the loop. The CBS 2 Broadcast Center will change the face of local television in Chicago and allow us to connect with our viewers like never before.

CBS believes in Chicago and this region. We will continue to give voice to the important stories that affect our viewers. The technology that supports our news gathering efforts continues to develop. Likewise, technology available to consumers is vast and increasingly accessible.

It’s an exciting time to be part of television, whether as a broadcaster or a consumer. Speaking as both, I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
