The Village of Summit, a 911 community, lies just to the west of Midway Airport on what is Chicago Southland's highest point. Early in its history it was a trading post and later a stop on the railroad. Rail transportation remains an important asset to the community, as does its proximity to Midway. River service is also available.

Early in this century, Corn Products (now CPC International) moved in and built the village's first residential subdivision. CPC remains an important factor in Summit's economy, but has been joined by Mack Trucks and other business enterprises including Frito-Lay, a Fortune 500 company. An Enterprise Zone has enabled these companies to rehabilitate older plants, build new facilities, lessen property taxes, and gain funds for worker training.

Summit has immediate access to the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). A trip to the Loop aboard Metra commuter trains takes 15 minutes.
