Healthcare

High-quality, dependable and compassionate healthcare can be accessed through a score of medical centers and specialty care practices that dot the map of the greater Flossmoor area.

Within 10 minutes, residents of Flossmoor are afforded the opportunity to take advantage of the healthcare options at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. This 291-bed acute-care facility in Hazel Crest offers an extensive scope of inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic and ambulatory services that utilize the latest in medical technology and techniques. Top medical specialties at Advocate South Suburban are Oncology, Emergency Services, Obstetrics, Cardiology, Surgery and Women’s Health, among a list of other specialties and subspecialties. In addition to these services are support groups, educational programming and community wellness programs.

Nearby Harvey is home to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, a medical resource renown for its Cancer and Heart Care services. The hospital’s Cancer Program is one of just 17 programs of its type in the state to be designated as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. This classification is the highest distinction presented to hospitals unaffiliated with a university. And the recognitions don’t stop there.

HealthGrades, a third party organization specializing in the rating of hospital performance, recently granted Ingalls a five-star rating for valve replacement surgery, treatment of heart attack and treatment of heart failure. HealthGrades ranks Ingalls among the top 15 in the state of Illinois for heart surgery.

Additionally, Ingalls Memorial Hospital has been named as one of “America’s Best Hospitals,” as listed in the 18th annual edition of U.S. News & World Report (July 2007). This acknowledgment has been received an impressive six years in a row. Ingalls was again cited in two separate categories - ranked 36th in the nation for excellence in Neurology and Neurosurgery, and 41st in the category of Digestive Diseases in the publication’s 2006 ranking.

The newest addition to Ingalls is the Urgent Aid Center, an extension of the hospital’s emergency room, specifically designed to deliver quality, timely care. Completed in October of 2005, the Urgent Aid Center is located at the new Ingalls Family Care Center on Governors Highway between Vollmer Road and Kedzie Avenue in Flossmoor. The 80,000-square-foot building brings together a 24-hour, low-level emergency room, comprehensive diagnostic and imaging capabilities, extensive physical therapy and sports medicine services, wellness and education programs, private physician office suites and an on-site retail pharmacy.

Further healthcare resources that can be reached in no time from Flossmoor include St. Francis Hospital & Health Center in Blue Island; St. James Medical Center in Olympia Fields Campus; and St. James Hospital Medical Center in Chicago Heights.

Flossmoor is also home to a great number of specialty care physicians, ranging from orthodontists, primary care physicians and physical therapists to optometrists, chiropractors and internal medicine physicians. Many of these medical professionals are active members of the community and volunteer their services and time to help those in need.

For the community’s mature population, there are plenty of options for assisted living, along with a variety of senior centers created to cater to the needs of the elderly by providing round-the-clock healthcare in a home-like retirement complex.
