The Future

The Chain O’Lakes currently has more boaters than ever in its history, yet there are far fewer hotels and cottages than there were 100 years ago. Most of the current 26,000 boats registered today are either attached to the weekend warriors or the new breed of permanent residents. Back in 1910, the visitors needed a place to stay—a resort, a cottage, a hotel. That level of need is greatly diminished today.

Fox Lake has transitioned from being a resort town to being a recreational residential community, where people live and mostly commute to work while raising their families. The downtown business section has changed from its heyday, with its future still being written. The Route 12 corridor has grown considerably, with new businesses supporting strip malls south of town. Business organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce, now have a broader membership crossing many geographic and business lines…and remain the support to business and community. As written in the Chamber’s Mission Statement: To promote business, support business interests and provide programs and services that best serve the interests of our members and the residents of our area.
