Housing Authority

Presently, a large portion of America’s senior population is facing inadequate long-term financial care, a problem which appears will get worse before better. With an estimated 36 million citizens over 65 years of age, a number that is predicted to increase in the future, there is a need to relieve this tremendous strain on the senior population, and ensure the health, safety, finances and well-being of seniors.

Many seniors require assistance in any number of different areas, ranging from in-home care, Alzheimer’s care to companionship services. However, many older people are finding out that the programs they had depended on are unable to provide many necessary services, and are now looking for someone to turn to. Fortunately, Grundy County has a number of profit and not-for-profit organizations that are concerned with the special needs of its senior population.

To that end, the state instituted the Illinois Housing Authorities Act, which seeks to provide affordable housing opportunities for low-income residents. That Act is intended to encourage municipalities and counties like Grundy to incorporate affordable housing into their communities, and requires all counties and municipalities with insufficient affordable housing, to adopt an affordable housing plan. It is within the guidelines of that act that the Grundy County Housing Authority, an independent Illinois municipal corporation, works.

The Grundy County Housing Authority maintains three housing developments, each of which is open to qualified senior residents. To qualify, seniors must either be: a member of an elderly family, whose head, spouse, or sole member is a person who is at least 62 years of age; two or more persons who are at least 62 years of age living together; or one or more persons who are at least 62 years of age living with one or more live-in aides.

The residences maintained by the GCHA are not only well kept and perfectly suited to its senior residents, but also provide a number of additional services, amenities and programs that make their stay more comfortable and enjoyable.

The Gardner Village Commons and Saratoga Towers offer one-bedroom apartments at the cost of $500 per month to residents whose annual income is less than $44,500 for two and $38,900 for a single person, and includes water, sewer, gas and garbage service.

In addition to a quality living environment, the Housing Authority is responsible for organizing many health seminars and informational programs throughout the year, including a chiropractic seminar, free monthly blood pressure screenings and meetings with the Grundy County Health Department, regarding health empowerment.

Other practical services are given by members of the community, such as an informational meeting with a representative from Grundy County Senior Services, and recreational events that keep senior residents entertained. Bingo takes place in the Community Room of Saratoga Towers every Saturday afternoon at 2:00, and there are several exercise classes every week.

Thanks to legislation geared towards the concerns of the senior population and a community-minded local government, Grundy County seniors can approach their later years free of worry.
