Kane County Regional Overview

Kane County has seen major growth in all of its communities over the years and expects to maintain that growth well into the future. As part of the Chicagoland area, the county benefits immensely from the City of Chicago as well as its adjacent counties. While each municipality within the region encompasses its own character and values, they all strive to make Kane County an attractive place to live, visit or establish business ventures.

Shortly after Illinois’s statehood in 1818, permanent settlers began to inhabit the developing region that would soon become Kane County. With an expanding population, the Illinois legislative body created Kane County from LaSalle County in 1836. The county is named for U.S. Senator and the first Secretary of State of Illinois Elias Kent Kane. LaFox, or what is now Geneva, was chosen as the county seat.

An influx of people came to the county in search of available work shortly after the Civil War’s end. Kane County’s quick population growth persisted through the 1900s, doubling in size between 1890 and 1940 from 65,000 to 130,000, and doubling again between 1940 and 1970 to 260,000 residents. Business and industry, healthcare facilities and educational opportunities also increased in number throughout these decades.

Currently hailing as one of the largest counties in Illinois, Kane County proceeds to expand today. Top-notch resources in the county include outstanding education systems and facilities, top-rated healthcare and easy access to shopping districts. The communities of Kane County boast countless events and festivals throughout the year, drawing in visitors from all over.

Residents and visitors of the area enjoy all that Kane County has to offer, from convenient amenities and affordable housing to beautiful recreational sites and an abundance of entertainment options. The county’s ideal location also adds to its allure.

The advantages to living in the Kane County region are endless—it is no wonder the area continues to flourish year after year.
