Mattoon is encircled by a number of transportation systems including major highways, rail lines and airports.

Interstate 57, a major north-south highway that runs through the east and southern tip of Mattoon, allows easy navigation through the city. The interstate offers three exits to Mattoon, including the new Exit 192. In addition to I-57, the community’s bloodlines include U.S. Route 45 and State Routes 121 and 16.

Amtrak provides service to and from Mattoon at the Illinois Central Station, located in downtown Mattoon. Between 2,500 and 3,300 commuters each month use the services provided by the rail line in Mattoon, which offers three morning trains, as well as three in the evening. Travelers also have access to the bus services of Greyhound, with a bus stop located at 1904 Broadway Avenue.A number of airports are located in and near the Mattoon city limits, including Coles County Memorial Airport in the Mattoon, located five minutes east of I-57, along with the University of Illinois-Willard Airport in Savoy and the Decatur Airport.
