Mattoon Special Olympics

Each September, more than 800 Special Olympian Athletes from the area gather on the grounds of Lake Land College for the annual Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF), organized by employees of Consolidated Communications. SOFF is a one-of-a-kind day of fun and non-competitive games for athletes from Area 9 Special Olympics. At SOFF, each athlete is paired with a Friend-For-A-Day who escorts the athlete around the tent city of activities.

The event has grown from its beginnings in 1984 with just a few hundred athletes and volunteers to the largest event of its kind in the U.S. More than 1,500 volunteers sign up each year from area colleges and universities, local businesses and community organizations to help make this day a success.
