Golf is so important to the village that it took its name from the area’s country club. The Midlothian Country Club is a private club founded in 1900 by prominent Chicago businessmen looking for a retreat for their families. The rolling hills of the land reminded them of the Midlothian described in Sir Walter Scott’s book “Heart of Midlothian.” Midlothian is in Scotland where golf was first played and the club chose Midlothian as their name.

The club is one of the first golf clubs in the country. It remains a prestigious course. The mayor’s annual charity golf classic is held here every year.
