Those that love the outdoors take advantage of Niles Park District's comprehensive program of activities, sports, and recreation for all ages. Niles residents enjoy facilities at the many parks, local golf course, and the thousands of other recreational facilities found throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and the western suburbs. There are plenty of golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, walking paths and hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing, boating and much more.
For the avid golfer or weekend duffer, the Chicago metropolitan area is recognized as the home of some of the best golfing anywhere in the world, with dozens of challenging courses to suit all tastes and skill levels. In addition, there are more than 40 golf courses in adjacent DuPage County alone. In Niles itself, Tam Golf Course is a beautiful 9-hole course, situated on a branch of the Chicago River. The course gives golfers of all abilities a chance to play under conditions normally only seen at private country clubs. Tam also features a large putting green, golf lessons, and pro shop.
If you've been stuck inside with meetings all day or maybe you're looking for activities to keep the kids happy, then get outside and enjoy the weather at any one of the many beautiful parks and forest preserves Niles has to offer. Both Cook and DuPage Counties have thousands of acres of forest preserve in several nearby locations. Meticulously maintained, the forest preserves are available for family outings, company events and special occasions. Information is available at the Niles Chamber of Commerce or respective County Forest Preserve District office.
With over 20 park sites encompassing 95 acres, the Niles Park District offers year-round activities including an indoor ice-skating rink, lighted tennis courts, basketball/volleyball courts, floor hockey, softball/baseball fields, indoor/ outdoor swimming pools, batting cages, and miniature golf. The Park District's administrative offices are located at 6676 Howard. The Leaning Tower YMCA, located on Touhy, also offers a multitude of programs and services to meet any recreational need. Their extensive facilities house fitness centers, a weight room, swimming pools, and living quarters.
Niles Park District also oversees the new, 7-acre Pioneer Park site at the southeast corner of Touhy and Harlem Avenue. The park features two baseball fields with dugouts, batting cages, an 18-hole mini-golf course, clubhouse and more. This park replaces the Jozwiak Park, which is now the home of the new Public Services Facility.
Recently, Niles opened a state-of-the-art, Human Services and Family Fitness Center boasting a swimming pool, indoor track, basketball courts, aerobics room and day care center. A 5,000 square foot fitness facility, it provides an opportunity for individuals to develop a comprehensive workout program with the assistance of professional staff. A thorough fitness assessment and new member orientation are included in the annual member fee.
