Northbrook Park District

Serving as an integral source of recreation, education, culture, and overall wellness since 1927, the Northbrook Park District today manages more than 500 acres of land in 19 various park sites, in addition to approximately 1,300 year-round programs and activities for children and adults.

Techny Prairie Park & Field

Falling under the Park District’s jurisdiction is the newer development of Techny Prairie Park & Field. “In the late 1990s, once the Park District learned that the property was for sale, we began negotiations with the property owners, and in 2000 the voters passed a referendum to purchase the property,” explains Ed Dalton, Director of Parks and Properties. “In 2003 a master plan was designed for the parcel, with development plans created in 2004 and construction beginning in 2005. The grand opening [of Techny Prairie Park & Field] was held September 30, 2006.”

The diverse array of park amenities include the restored prairie and walking paths; a nine-hole, Par 3 golf course and golf shop; two synthetic turf soccer/lacrosse fields; an additional softball field; batting cages; a skate park; playground equipment; an enlarged fishing pond; and a spacious picnic shelter.

According to Gail Baritz, Northbrook Park District Media Specialist, “The grand opening of the park represented the culmination of years of hopes, dreams and plans to create an exceptional recreational showpiece that provides a wide assortment of activities in one location.”

Northbrook Velodrome

The Ed Rudolph Velodrome, named for trainer Edward J. Rudolph who stood as a significant force behind the development of the facility, is one of only two arenas utilized for track cycling in Illinois, and one of the few in the nation. The Park District-operated facility is open to the public daily, when it is not playing host to a number of championship events such as the Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race and the Elaine Nekritz Trophy Race.
