Community Overview

Northfield is the best of both worlds. It’s a thriving, desirable suburb and a village with lots of hometown charm. Incorporated in 1926 and located 20 miles from the heart of Chicago’s loop, Northfield is only three miles from Lake Michigan.

With a population of approximately 5,700, it attracts those looking for a small-town way of life close to a large city. Residents really do know one another and share a strong community spirit. In 2003, Northfield was voted one of the top four of Chicago Magazine’s “Great Places to Live.” Northfield’s first-ever Community Center was built a few years ago because of a one-of-a-kind cooperative partnership between its three taxing bodies: the Village, the schools and the Park District.

Northfield’s personality is felt in its rural, countryside atmosphere. When the Village was incorporated, a commitment was made to protect open spaces, a commitment that continues today as the Village successfully balances that prized open space with commercial development. This is why more than half of Northfield’s three square miles are zoned for acre-sized lots—many set on beautiful country lanes. There are more than 30 acres of open parkland, including a bird sanctuary. The Village is one of the few suburbs that issues licenses for keeping horses.

The Village of Northfield is a warm, family-oriented community with scenic properties, an outstanding school system and a wonderful mix of businesses. It offers a simple, friendly way of life.
