For the commuter, many forms of transportation are available to make the trip in and around Oak Park easy. Drivers have ready access to the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290), and connection with several other major highways. Public transit is abundant, with two Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) “El” rail lines—the Blue and the Green—the Union Pacific West Lines of the Metra rail system, 10 Pace and eight CTA bus service lines. A free shuttle is available for access to Oak Park’s acclaimed sites and attractions.

O’Hare International Airport sits a mere 10 miles from Oak Park; while Midway Airport is approximately eight miles away. The locale of the village puts it nine miles directly west of downtown Chicago, and within minutes, residents will be in the neighboring communities of Forest Park, River Forest, Elmwood Park and Berwyn.

The community is known around the world for its strong architectural tradition, home to renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures, including his home and studio and the Unity Temple. Oak Park’s three historic districts—The Ridgeland/Oak Park Historic District, the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie School of Architecture Historic District and the Gunderson Historic District—are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nine structures outside of these districts have also been placed on the Register, accompanied by a handful of local landmarks. Historic preservation remains a crucial aspect of the community, with the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) leading the cause.

Unifying the community’s neighborhoods is a top priority in Oak Park. Through several community programs, such as Block Parties, a strong connection among residents is encouraged. Community organizations also play a vital role in Oak Park—from the more than 50 houses of worship to organizations promoting sports and recreation.
