The area of rolling hills and bluffs located on the north and east sides of the Mississippi River from Grafton to Hartford and South Roxana is known locally as the River Bend, referring to the wandering course of the Mississippi River through the area.
The River Bend Growth Association is both the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Organization for the communities of the River Bend. As a Chamber of Commerce, we actively promote activities among our member businesses. As an Economic Development Organization, we work closely with state, regional, county and local officials to develop new employment opportunities.
The various River Bend communities offer a tremendous variety of housing opportunities ranging from starter homes in mature, stable communities to new homes in all price ranges, rural parcels, mini-farms, and even restored mansions overlooking the Mississippi River.
The area also offers tremendous recreational opportunities. The Alton Marina and the Grafton Marina are two of the country’s finest marinas, one located on the Mississippi River at the foot of the Clark Bridge and one located at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Fishing, boating, hunting and water skiing are popular sports on the river. The Great River Road, which runs adjacent to the Mississippi River through the area, is a National Scenic Byway.
The area hosts some of the finest public parks in the Midwest. Ten golf courses are in the immediate area. The golf courses at Gordon F. Moore Park in Alton and Belk Park in Wood River are two of the finest municipally-owned courses in the nation. Recreational opportunities for youths include baseball, soccer, football, tennis and water sports.
The River Bend communities are within minutes of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, and Principia College in historic Elsah. All are considered the best in their class in Illinois. In addition, St. Louis-based colleges and universities are just minutes away. The area has numerous fine public and private high schools, convenient primary and middle schools and numerous pre-school programs.
Shopping is excellent with all of the larger retailers and major discount stores having stores in the area plus scores of fine locally-owned shops offering unique shopping experiences.
All in all, the River Bend area is a great place to live, work and/or raise a family. If you desire additional information about the area, please call us at 618-467-2280 or check our web site at www.growthassociation.com.
