Youth Activities

 

Baseball, softball, and soccer are popular summer pastimes for the youth of the River Bend area. Alton’s program offers baseball and softball for youngsters from kindergarten through high school, USTA team tennis for kids, a high school tennis camp, Renegades Youth Tackle Football, and summer playground programs, among many others. The Alton Youth Symphony, Boys & Girls Club of Alton & Bethalto, the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, the YWCA and the Jacoby Arts Center offer camps and activities throughout the year.

In Bethalto, the Boys & Girls Club offers sports programming for both boys and girls. A new skating park is available for youth. Foster Township provides a park with play apparatus alongside the town hall. Godfrey’s Parks and Recreation Department offers youth sports programs throughout the year including baseball, soccer and basketball for children up to age 12.

Several communities offer rollerblading parks for youngsters. In Roxana, the village recreation department oversees the use of the gymnasium in the village hall building. In Wood River, the city’s recreation department organizes league play at its large sports complex and offers swimming lessons at the city’s impressive aquatic center.

Trails West Council of the Boy Scouts of America annually serves over 7,000 youth from Bond, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin and Madison counties. Boys age 7-11 participate in Cub Scouts, boys age 11-18 participate in Boy Scouts and both boys and girls age 14-21 participate in the Venturing and Career Exploring programs. Good character is an outcome of the Scouting program. Adult volunteers and professional staff teach leadership, citizenship and personal fitness through fun leisure and educational activities such as swimming, pioneering, animal science, hiking, nature and life saving…just to name a few. Beautiful Camp Warren Levis is located in the Village of Godfrey on 280 acres of timber and wilderness. Camp Warren Levis has high and low ropes courses with climbing walls. The programs, including an Olympic size pool and overnight facilities, are available to outside groups for a fee. For additional information, call 618-259-2145 ext. 114.
