Education

The Rockford area offers a wide variety of educational choices. Residents have access to state-of-the-art facilities and innovative programs for preschool, public or private school, workforce training, career enhancement, GEDs, higher education or life enrichment.

Rockford Public Schools is the third-largest school district in Illinois and the largest employer in the Winnebago-Boone County area. It covers an area of about 170 square miles and serves a diverse group of more than 29,000 students. It encompasses theme schools and special programs for the arts, Montessori, work-based learning, fresh start, academically gifted, creative and performing arts, languages and special education. In 2009, Rockford formed three new charter public schools, privately-operated, publicly-funded schools of choice open to any student in the district.

The Rockford area also is home to a number of private elementary and secondary schools, affiliated with area churches and other organizations.

University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford educates 150 medical students each year and houses a family practice residency program.

Rockford College is a four-year, independent, coeducational institution founded in 1847 with more than 70 majors, minors and concentrations, and graduate programs in business and education.

Rockford Career College offers nearly 25 programs in exceptional career areas leading to two-year associate of applied science degrees, one-year diplomas and short-term certificates.

Rock Valley College, the area’s community college, offers 28 degree programs that award an associate’s degree, almost 60 course areas that lead to four-year degrees and more than 60 certificate programs and four apprenticeship programs in specialized training areas.

NIU-Rockford offers continuing education and accreditation classes, as well as training and conference facilities, and a number of undergraduate and graduate-level programs.
