The City Council is comprised of eight elected Alderpersons, a City Clerk and Mayor. The City Council readily accepts the challenges associated with providing services and governmental direction to our city. The Sandwich City Council meets every Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located within the City Hall Annex at 128 E. Railroad Street. In addition, the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month respectively. All meetings are open to the public and interested citizens are strongly encouraged to attend.

The City’s Public Works Department is headed by the Superintendent of Public Works and seven full-time employees. The City also has an Engineer and full-time Building Inspector on staff. The friendly, helpful staff at City Hall can assist you with utility billing, permit applications and general questions.

Sandwich Fire/Rescue Department
The District currently covers 55 square miles and protects a population of over 14,500. The original Sandwich Fire Department was organized January 22, 1884, starting with Hose Company #1. At one time, the fire station was housed at the rear of what is now the historic Opera House.

Sandwich Police Department
As a 24-7 full-dispatch organization, the Sandwich Police Department consists of 16 sworn officers, two records personnel and seven full- or part-time telecommunicators. Also dispatching for the Somonauk Police Department, the department contributes to several programs which serve the public: D.A.R.E., Police Benevolent and Law Enforcement Scholarship. The department’s efficient and enthusiastic group of officers protect and serve the community and can be found teaching students at local schools, providing security at benefits, speaking to community groups and helping firefighters and paramedics. With the public’s safety its main concern, the department’s focus is to maintain a comfortable and secure way of living for the citizens of Sandwich.

The officers, firefighters and EMS personnel of the Sandwich Fire Department are committed to protect the lives and property of the inhabitants of the Sandwich Community Fire Protection District from the adverse effects of fire and exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature. This commitment to fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue and other special services, shall be maintained by continuous training, use of professional skills and personal dedication.
