Tourism is a growing contributor to the character of Will County. Harrah’s and Empress Riverboat Casinos in Joliet draw hundreds of thousands annually with their luxurious surroundings, gambling excitement, first-class dining and nationally known entertainers. Elegantly restored, the Rialto Square Theatre presents a variety of the biggest and best in entertainment while retaining the grandeur and ambiance of a lavish 1926 vaudeville movie palace. For those more inclined to enjoy nature’s gifts, the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor features state parks, forest preserves, fish and wildlife areas, hiking trails, canoe routes and more along this unique river route.
Joliet’s two racing facilities are rapidly positioning the city as the auto racing capital of the Midwest. Chicagoland Speedway, the 75,000-seat NASCAR/IRL speedway, hosts two major racing weekends. Chicagoland Speedway also hosts its IRL weekend in early September each year. Route 66 Raceway, located right next to the Chicagoland Speedway, has a capacity of 35,000 fans and 38 luxury suites. The Joliet JackHammers play minor league baseball at the state-of-the-art Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet, providing clean, family entertainment in a safe, convenient environment.
Tinley Park is home to the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre (formerly the Tweeter Center), Chicago’s largest outdoor covered music theater. This venue brings over 400,000 through the village every year. Musicians such as Aerosmith, Coldplay, Kanye West, Faith Hill and many more have performed there, making Will County a Mecca for music fans region-wide.
The county is also chock full of local festivities. Channahon holds the five-day Three Rivers Festival annually at the end of August. Summerfest is Minooka’s largest event, held on the weekend prior to Labor Day weekend. The Frankfort Fall Festival is one of the largest outdoor festivals in the Midwest. During the rest of the year, other events are planned to celebrate holidays and local heritage.
For those visitors who wish to stay the night and enjoy all that Will County has to offer, there are dozens of major hotel chains and camping facilities featuring a range of amenities. Several facilities offer meeting and conference space.
