History

The vibrant heritage of Madison County can be experienced through its historical attractions. Dating as far back as 1000 B.C., Anderson/Madison County was home to the pre-historic Adena Hopewell People. Their sacred festival and burial grounds can be seen at Mounds State Park.

McClain’s Historical Military Armor Museum presents living history from World War I through Desert Storm. Restored military vehicles are on display along with exhibits of America’s military traditions.

Historic architecture can also be found in downtown Anderson — the 1929 Paramount Atmospheric Theatre and the restored Carnegie Building are prime examples. Alexandria offers the historic Alex Theater, while Elwood boasts a historic Opera House. All of these give residents and guests a sample of local historic splendor.
