Visitors and residents never have a problem finding something to do with 101 lakes and Indiana’s most magnificent park just an easy drive away.

Lakes range here from just a few acres to 1,034, and go from almost secluded to well populated. Lakes here offer a variety of activities from relaxing, boating, water skiing and fishing. Swimmers and sunbathers have public beaches on 800 acres to splash and tan at Clear, Crooked, Pleasant and Hamilton Lakes. Public launches and beaches make sure everyone has a terrific experience, and for those without a boat several marinas on the lakes provide boat and water ski rentals.

Visitors can learn about the local environment at the 1,200-acre Pokagon State Park’s nature center. The park also provides two beaches on Lake James, trail rides, campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas and boat rentals. When the temperature dips, ice fisherman carve out spots on lakes, snowmobilers head down trails on Crooked and James Lakes, tobogganers whoosh down a 1/4 – mile run at Pokagon State Park and cross country skiers take in the winter white wonderland.

The 20-acre Wing Haven Nature Preserve, Woodland Bog, Beachwood Nature Reserve, Ropchan Memorial Nature Reserve, 80-acre McClue Reserve, 80-acre Anspaugh Wildlife Habitat Trust Area and the Fawn River State Fish Hatchery are all local sites that appeal to hikers and naturalists alike. The fish hatchery has fish-rearing ponds that produce a variety of game and pan fish.

Fishing enthusiasts are close to nirvana when they visit Steuben County. Fishing from docks, boats and shore, trolling (and hooking) walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike, perch, crappie and bluegill. Waterways stocked b the local fish hatchery like: Fawn and Pigeon Rivers, Gage, Mclish and Ball Lakes offer a good catch. But, according to experts Clear, James and Crooked Lake are the fishing hot spots in the Angola area.

For those looking to stay dry and off the water, action is sure to be found at: the Angola Motor Speedway, a stock car racing track in Fremont, at one bowling alley in Angola and five 18-hole, two 9-hole and two miniature golf courses located in the area. Zollner Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole course located at Trine University, it has become the sight of three NAIA National Golf Championships.

When residents are looking to stay active they go to the local park districts that maintains ball diamonds, picnic facilities, hiking paths, playgrounds, tennis courts and other natural areas at a variety of locations. The park district also organizes summer recreation programs, including sport leagues, and operates the community swimming pool at Vistula Park.
