Avon Education

Excellent education is readily at-hand for Avon community residents.

The label “award-winning” crops up in nearly every conversation about the public school system. The Indiana Department of Education has recognized White Oak, Maple and Hickory Elementary Schools with its highest “Four Star” rating. Still, educators know it takes constant attention to achieve these accolades – that is why we begin emphasizing strong reading and math literacy skills in the kindergarten program. We continue to stress the importance throughout their educational journey, while encouraging drug abuse resistance messages, peer-to-peer facilitating programs, athletics, music, student council, yearbooks, science fairs and a newcomers committee along the way.

The $65 million Avon High School, constructed in 1999, allows students and the community to take advantage of a 4,100-seat gymnasium, eight-lane swimming pool, a football field that can hold up to 5,000 spectators and a 1,000-seat auditorium. Avon High School has grown from providing exceptional education to 1,600 students in its earlier years to serving approximately 2,235 students today. Construction of a new “senior” (12th grade) center will commence the summer of 2008.

But a building is only as good as the students’ outstanding educational opportunities that lie within. Avon High School offers accelerated courses in algebra, English, geometry, mathematical analysis, U.S. history and American foreign policy, and an advanced placement courses in calculus, statistics, chemistry and physics. Students may also earn college credits within the curriculum. The student newspaper, The Echo, rakes in state honors.

Finding reliable resources in the region is not difficult for both students and the community. Several public libraries are located within Hendricks County, with Avon boasting one of the largest. The Avon-Washington Township Library provides an abundance of resources for those residing in the community. The Indianapolis area also provides three extensive libraries within 30 minutes driving distance from Avon.
