Housing in Carmel is an art. For several decades, our city administrators have remained firm on building codes, insisting on high standards. As a result, Carmel doesn’t resemble any other thriving-edge city in America.
For starters, most of Carmel’s homes are made of lasting brick or stone exteriors — builders usually shy away from materials that don’t last a lifetime. This way, subdivisions continue to maintain their pristine appearances and increase in financial value. And thanks to a mature guiding hand, Carmel’s growth has been steady — not explosive — so there has been time to build the necessary roads, schools and city services to keep pace with a residential concentration.
Currently, Carmel is midway through maturation, with the east side reaching build-out on available land. The west side still offers plenty of residentially zoned acreage for new houses that reflect today’s family.
The home styles themselves offer a wonderful eclectic mix, from well-preserved Victorians near the downtown center to private neighborhoods that feature Georgian architecture and their own town squares (complete with boulevard street scapes, restaurants, coffee shops and a meeting place clock tower for residents’ enjoyment).
Interested in a golfing community? There are several award-winning custom builders willing to create a one-of-a-kind home abutting the well-manicured greens. There are even a few waterfront possibilities to explore as the spot for your dream home.
What do you picture in your fantasy home? A large proportion of Indianapolis’ home shows take place in Carmel because builders and interior designers here pay such close attention to details. Many of the floor plans feature four or five bedrooms, three-car garages and more than 3,000-square feet. Master bedroom suites often feature fun amenities like dual showerheads, Jacuzzi tubs and televisions in the ceiling. Basements with theme bars, poker tournament set-ups and home theaters (complete with cinema seating and popcorn machines) are also a specialty.
Builders in Carmel love to plan some of the biggest kitchens you’ll find anywhere, and they flood it all with sunlight, wood details and fabulous faux painting styles ripped straight from the pages of an East Coast fashion magazine.
Even area apartments and temporary housing options offer a distinct touch of class — all-brick buildings with custom-home amenities like designer furniture, the latest in home electronics capabilities and resort-style pools, concierge desks and beautiful gardens to stroll.
Carmel has no less than four independent communities for seniors — each boasting the same kind of rich, quality-housing environment expected in the city. Many retired couples select these apartments as a way to downsize from the hassles of property ownership without sacrificing lifestyle. And medical care is just a heartbeat away. Primelife Enrichment, our senior services center, also boasts a full complement of activities, from swimming to an outdoor walking track to a wide variety of programs.
