Health Care in Northwest Indiana

Methodist Hospitals
Methodist Hospitals have a number of locations throughout Northwest Indiana, with two full-service campuses – Northlake Campus in Gary and Southlake Campus in Merrillville. Methodist Hospitals value integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence, and the focus on these values is apparent in all that they do. The Methodist Hospital system provides patients with a long list of services, a small sample that includes bloodless medicine, behavioral health services, surgical weight loss/bariatrics, and a neuroscience institute.

Methodist Hospitals have several accreditations and recognitions, including being ranked 13th out 175 hospitals in the state on U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-2014 Best Hospitals list; receiving the Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award in 2013 for its stroke program by the American Heart and Stroke Association; and becoming Northwest Indiana’s Most Decorated Breast Cancer Program.

Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Crown Point
For more than 135 years, the Franciscan Alliance has been providing patients from Indiana, Illinois and Michigan with trusted, innovative, faith-based care. The Franciscan Alliance saw its beginnings in 1875 when a group of Catholic sisters from Germany brought ministries of health and education, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, to the Midwest. Established in 1974, Franciscan St. Anthony Medical Center is a faith-based integrated health care center providing full-service acute care in Crown Point.

Among the services that Saint Anthony Medical Center provides are the Burrell Cancer Institute, Center for Continence, Sleep Disorders Clinic, palliative care, Sports Medicine Institute and more. Along with providing this state-of-the-art medical care, the Franciscan Alliance also strongly believes that “spiritual care is a vital part” of treating each patient. Members of the St. Anthony team are sure to assess each family’s spiritual values and needs and provide them spiritual comfort, chapel/worship services and prayer. The medical center’s treatment for hip fractures has been given a five-star rating by Healthgrades for five years in a row. It houses the most advanced Intensive Care/Intermediate Care Unit and it has been awarded the Post-Tribune Neighbors Choice Award for Best Hospital.

In keeping with the Franciscan Alliance’s commitment to education as well as health care, St. Anthony Health holds a variety of classes, health screenings and seminars to educate the community about health and wellness issues. These events range from diabetes education classes and a Parkinson’s disease support group to a preparing for childbirth program and a safe-sitter babysitting course. Registration for these programs is open to the public, and fees vary from class to class but are often covered by insurance companies.
