Join the Fun - Recreation

DeKalb County residents take great pleasure in the range of recreational activities afforded in the area. From active to passive leisure interests, there is truly something for everyone.

Local municipal parks and facilities offer exceptional opportunities for recreation. Open spaces, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, public pools and more are all found within DeKalb County. Additionally the area hosts a paintball facility, one of the largest shotgun shooting facilities in the region and three public golf courses for those who like to spend a day on the greens. Golfers regularly tee off at Bridgewater Golf Club East, Bridgewater Club West and Garrett Country Club, each offering a fully-stocked pro shop, an on-site PGA professional and varied layouts to challenge even the seasoned golfer.

Just west of DeKalb County is the scenic Chain O’ Lakes State Park, which is home to nine connecting kettle lakes that serve as a haven for small boaters, fishers and those who enjoy such activities as swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Surrounding the Chain O’ Lakes are opportunities for hiking and cross-country skiing along forested trails, picnicking, camping and environmental education at the nature center. The Chain O’ Lakes also hosts various special events, including Welcome Back Weekend, Fishing Derby, Poker Paddle, Canoe ‘Hikes’ and a host of school programs.

Also nearby is Pokagon State Park, one of Indiana’s original parks. This park is home to a nature center, picnic areas, campsites, playground equipment, cross-country skiing trails, a saddle barn and a seasonal twin-track toboggan run. The quarter-mile, refrigerated toboggan run is a major draw in the wintertime, running from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February.

The YMCA of DeKalb County is another great resource for active community members. With two locations in Auburn (the Main Street Facility at 310 N. Main Street and the North Street Facility at 533 North Street), members have ready access to the Y’s exceptional facilities and programming. Among the amenities accessed through the local YMCA facilities are fitness centers, gymnasiums, soccer fields, racquetball courts and an eight-lane competitive pool. There is also programming for the whole family. Members young and old take advantage of fitness classes, aquatics classes, youth and adult sports, childcare services and outreach programs, including afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana – an after-school drug prevention program for youth. Garrett has a Community Center also.
