Government

City of Monticello officials are dedicated to serving all citizens with the quick responsiveness of a mayor-council form of government. The Mayor serves with four council members elected from city wards, a council-at-large representative, the clerk-treasurer and the city attorney.

Public Safety is a high city priority. The Monticello Police Department has quality full-time officers with reserve and part-time personnel adding to the department. Throughout the community, officers are highly visible as they provide business security checks and assistance at community events. The police department is active in area schools providing educational material on safety issues and anti-substance abuse programs. White County Sheriff’s Department manages county-wide law enforcement services.

The Monticello Fire Department has over twenty full-time firefighters, several part-time employees, and volunteers. The department has four life-support ambulances staffed by EMT’s, Advanced EMT’s and Paramedics. Volunteers with EMS and Paramedic credentials are also part of the professional staff.

The Fire Department has a full fleet of quality fire-fighting equipment, including a 100-foot aerial ladder, a heavy-duty rescue vehicle with advanced life support, three engines, and a 2,000-gallon tanker. Firefighters assist area Conservation Officers in water rescue operations. Department officials are responsible to review all new community construction plans to insure adequate fire safety standards.

The Fire Department has an ISO Public Protection Classification rating of 4. Since 1971, ISO has been a leading source of information about property/casualty insurance risk.

The Monticello City Streets, Parks, Water, and Sewage Treatment Departments provide the same excellence in service as the police and fire departments. The Monticello Water Works renovated the historic standpipe on South Bluff Street. Built in 1895, it is one of the State of Indiana’s oldest existing standpipes. e
