Transportation & Location

The major appeal to establishing a business or building a home in this region of Indiana is the location. Delaware County’s position in East Central Indiana places it in close proximity to more than 60 percent of the nation’s population. Located just fifty eight miles northeast of Indianapolis, Muncie-Delaware County commuters utilize four-lane access to both Interstate 69 and Interstate 70, as well as access to four state highways and one U.S. highway.

The city of Muncie is fortunate to have an award-winning transportation network. The Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) supplies daily travelers with a fixed-route bus service to destinations within city limits. MITS destinations include shopping centers, medical facilities, employment locations, educational campuses, residential areas, recreational sites and government establishments. MITS also offers free park-and-ride trolley service for those spending time downtown. For those with disabilities in need of friendly and convenient door-to-door transportation or those needing to get to and from work after regular hours, MITSplus and MITS JobConnection provide invaluable services.

For travel outside the city limits, a partnership with LifeStream Services has made transportation available through the new InterUrban system.

Air transportation services are available at the Delaware County Airport. Located on the north side of Muncie, Johnson Field features an FAA-operated control tower with an instrument landing system and two runways capable of providing both resident and corporate charter travel.

Muncie-Delaware County is also located within a 90-minute drive of three international airports: Indianapolis (65 miles), Fort Wayne (75 miles) and Dayton, Ohio (82 miles).
