Parks & Recreation

Ample opportunities for both active and passive leisure lie within Muncie and all of Delaware County through a number of recreational sites and facilities.

More than 1,150 acres of green space is maintained by multiple parks in and around Muncie, including Prairie Creek Reservoir on the southeastern side of the county. Visitors to the reservoir enjoy boating, fishing, camping, hiking and swimming.

Other parks in the area include Tuhey Park and McCullough Park, each of which has its own personality. Tuhey Park is home to a skateboard park, a BMX park and Tuhey pool; McCullough Park is home to more than 100 baseball games and the Soap Box Derby track.

The Delaware Greenways within the county afford outdoor enthusiasts some of the best recreational diversions in the region. Cardinal Greenway, which stretches more than 25 miles throughout Delaware County, was designated a National Recreational Trail in 2003. The trail winds from its northern-most point in Gaston south to Losantville, located just outside the county line. The White River Greenway is a 2.5-mile paved trail that winds through Muncie, while the Cardinal Greenway Equestrian Trail offers a two-mile trail strictly for equestrian use.

Organized recreational programs, including baseball, soccer, tennis, volleyball and softball leagues, are available for a variety of age groups. Many leagues and tournaments are offered through the modern Muncie SportsPlex, which boasts five lighted ball fields and 11 soccer fields. Sports lovers can also find active havens through the Muncie YMCA and YWCA, seven public and two private golf courses, and 11 locations for tennis.

A number of annual events are also found here, including the Muncie Endurathon. Since 1979, this one-day competition has continually attracted competitors from across the globe. The Endurathon includes a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run, along with the Aqua-Bike event and Sprint Race.

For those who would rather take a spectator’s perspective on sports, Ball State University’s NCAA Division 1A athletic teams provide for an entertaining time on the sidelines. The university’s award-winning teams have won a number of Mid-American Conference championships, assuring fans riveting sporting events throughout the year. Local high school athletics is another option for sports enthusiasts, with many of the teams continuously taking the top spot at the state championships.
