Primary healthcare is easily found within Muncie-Delaware County. The area prides itself on the establishment of a number of top-notch specialized clinics, private practices, pharmacies and an enhanced 911 emergency service. Muncie-Delaware County also has skilled assisted living centers and home healthcare options for the area’s mature adults and an acclaimed medical center.

A leader of Cardinal Health System, Ball Memorial Hospital (BMH) serves as a regional referral center and teaching facility. The medical facility offers a comprehensive list of services and programs and employs 2,500 on its staff and 260 on its medical team, making it the largest non-government employer in this section of Indiana. Representing over 45 medical specialties, Ball Memorial’s on-staff physicians are some of the most qualified in the region. Approximately 85 percent earn board certification – an admirable statistic that reaches far above the average in the medical field.

In 2008, Ball Memorial Hospital became the first hospital in Indiana to achieve the ISO 9001:2000 certification, a distinction held by only 12 other hospitals in the United States.

Modern healthcare is evident through the hospital’s Cancer Center, which opened its doors in 2002, and a state-of-the-art Emergency Department that opened in 2003. BMH is also equipped with an advanced Birthing Center, Comprehensive Breast Health Center, Outpatient Dialysis Center, open-sided MRI and a nationally revered Open Heart Surgery program.

In responding to the area’s continually growing healthcare needs, the 1.2 million-square-foot facility is currently undergoing a major revitalization. BMH plans to include 400,000 square feet of new and renovated space by 2010. The incorporation of a new south tower, expanded surgical suites, the development of better access to outpatient services and the promotion of an environment fostering private patient rooms round out the project’s construction plans.
